Please follow the basic sauna etiquette during your session.
Sauna rounds should last no longer than 20 minutes, with 5-15 minutes recommended for most people.
Always follow the operator’s instructions on how to pour water onto the hot rocks, and only use the provided sauna water.
No touching any part of the stove.
Enter and exit the sauna safely, and keep access points clear so others can leave swiftly if necessary.
Be sure to remove your shoes and have clean feet before entering, sit on a towel, and behave respectfully toward other bathers.
Keep your swimwear bottoms on at all times, and rinse off before using any cold plunge baths if provided.
The recommended sauna routine is simple:
First, rinse off in a shower before coming and entering the sauna.
Sit on a towel and get warm, usually for 5-15 minutes.
Afterward, cool down by using the provided watering can, bucket or by taking a plunge in the sea if the tide is right. (This is at your own risk and responsibility)
Rest to allow your body to reach equilibrium, and then repeat the process.
Top tip:
Pay attention to your heart rate—notice how it speeds up during the sauna and slows down during the cold plunge. When your heart rate returns to normal during rest, that’s a good indicator that you’re ready to return to the sauna.
Your session will be managed by a *Saunista*, who ensures that the sauna maintains the perfect temperature. Inside the sauna, there’s a ladle and a bucket of water which you can use to drizzle over the hot stones to create *löyly* (steam).
This raises the heat if you wish. Beginners are advised to spend about 10 minutes inside per round, but you should not exceed 20 minutes at a time. After each session, you can cool down using the outdoor watering cans or, depending on the tide, by taking a refreshing dip in the sea.
(All persons using the watering can or sea as a ‘cold plunge’ do so at their own risk. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you are a capable swimmer and can cope being exposed to the cold temperatures and currents of the sea)
The sauna can reach temperatures of up to 85°C, which is much hotter than the typical 35-40°C of a home shower. You can adjust the humidity by adding water to the hot rocks. To get the most out of your experience, it's recommended to cool down between rounds by using the watering cans or taking a dip in the sea, if conditions allow and at your own risk and responsibility.
Absolutely not! Your sauna experience is all about what feels right for you. If you'd like to take a dip in the sea, you’re welcome to, but please be mindful of the risks.
Alternatively, you can stand outside the sauna and cool down in the fresh sea air, pour a bucket of cool sea water over yourself, or use the watering can for a quick cool-down.
The felt sauna hat is the traditional way of cooling the head, face and hair during sauna bathing.
It can be used 'dry' to reflect the heat away from your face and head, or the sauna hat can be soaked in water and worn during the sauna. The water evaporates cooling your head and allowing cool water to refresh you whilst you sauna.
